Body Fat Calculator – US Navy Method
Determine your body fat percentage using simple circumference measurements with the U.S. Navy Method.
Body Fat Calculator: Calculate Your Body Fat Percentage (US Navy Method)
Your weight on the scale only tells you how strongly the Earth's gravity pulls you – it tells you absolutely nothing about your fitness or body composition. Two men weighing 90 kg at 1.80 m can look completely different: One has an athletic six-pack, the other is concerningly overweight. The only thing that makes this difference measurable is yourBody Fat Percentage (BFP). Our BFP calculator uses the US Navy formula, which has been validated for decades.
How does the US Navy Method work?
While expensive DXA scans (X-rays) are considered the gold standard and skinfold measurements (calipers) often require a lot of experience (depending on who pinches and how deep), the US Navy has offered an amazingly accurate formula since 1984 to calculate the operational readiness of its soldiers. All you need is a simple measuring tape.
Taking measurements correctly
- Neck Circumference: Measure horizontally just below the larynx (Adam's apple) around the neck without constricting the tape.
- Waist Circumference: Men measure directly at the level of the navel. Women measure at the narrowest point, between the lowest ribs and the iliac crest. Important: Do not suck in your stomach!
- Hip Circumference (Only for women!): Because women biologically store fat differently (on the buttocks) than men, the widest part of the buttocks is measured horizontally here. The WtHR calculator omits this value, but it is strictly necessary for women's pure BFP calculation.
BFP Tables: What is a good body fat percentage?
Evolutionarily, women need an approximately 8-10% higher body fat percentage (including essential breast tissue) than men to maintain a healthy hormonal balance.
- Men:
- Essential fat (Vital for life): 2-5% (Only used by pro bodybuilders for 1-2 days on stage)
- Athletic / Six-pack visibility: 8-14%
- Fitness / Healthy: 15-18%
- Overweight / Risk: Over 25%
- Women:
- Essential fat (Vital for life): 10-13% (Extremely stressful, menstruation often stops)
- Athletic / Definition: 16-20%
- Fitness / Healthy: 21-25%
- Overweight / Risk: Over 32%
Caution: Body fat scales (Bioimpedance) often lie!
Many people step on a "smart digital body fat scale" at home, which shoots tiny electrical currents through the feet to measure resistance (bioimpedance). Please ignore these values.
Body fat scales are notoriously inaccurate. Since the current seeks the shortest path (usually straight up one leg and down the other), the upper body is ignored. Furthermore, the result fluctuates by double-digit percentages depending on the body's water content, sweat on the feet, and the fill level of the stomach and bladder. The fitness proof was provided long ago: The measuring tape via the Navy method is the only realistic tool at home!
How do I lower my body fat percentage?
Your BFP calculator spits out a value that is too high? Don't do senseless crash diets. A sustainably athletic body needs "Body Recomposition": muscle up, fat down.
- Adjust nutrition: Determine your maintenance calories in the Calorie Calculator and set your deficit (approx. -400 kcal daily).
- Protein high! If you only eat salad on a diet, your body will first burn valuable muscle instead of stubborn fat (so your BFP won't drop). Keep your protein consumption exceedingly high (see Protein Table).
- Strength training instead of just cardio: Use a heavy training plan to signal to your body: "I need these muscles to survive, break down the fat on my hips instead!"
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a healthy body fat percentage?
For men, 14–17% is considered the fitness range, for women 21–24%. Athletes are often below that (men 6–13%, women 14–20%).
How accurate is the Navy method?
The Navy method has an accuracy of about ±3–4%. For better accuracy, always measure under the same conditions (morning, fasted).
Where do I measure waist circumference?
Measure at navel level, relaxed, don't suck in. Best measured in the morning before eating, as waist circumference fluctuates throughout the day.
Why do women need hip measurement?
Women store fat differently than men – especially at hips and thighs. The hip measurement significantly improves the formula's accuracy.
What is better, BMI or body fat %?
Body fat percentage is more meaningful than BMI because it distinguishes between fat and muscle mass. A muscular person can have a high BMI but low body fat.
