What is the Navy Method?

The U.S. Navy Method was developed in 1984 by Hodgdon and Beckett, using simple circumference measurements (waist, neck, and hip for women) along with height to estimate body fat percentage. It is one of the most accurate methods that doesn't require expensive equipment.

How to measure correctly

  • Waist: Measure at navel level, relaxed, don't suck in.
  • Neck: Measure below the larynx (Adam's apple).
  • Hip (women only): Measure at the widest point of the buttocks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

For men, 14–17% is considered the fitness range, for women 21–24%. Athletes are often below that (men 6–13%, women 14–20%).

How accurate is the Navy method?

The Navy method has an accuracy of about ±3–4%. For better accuracy, always measure under the same conditions (morning, fasted).

Where do I measure waist circumference?

Measure at navel level, relaxed, don't suck in. Best measured in the morning before eating, as waist circumference fluctuates throughout the day.

Why do women need hip measurement?

Women store fat differently than men – especially at hips and thighs. The hip measurement significantly improves the formula's accuracy.

What is better, BMI or body fat %?

Body fat percentage is more meaningful than BMI because it distinguishes between fat and muscle mass. A muscular person can have a high BMI but low body fat.
